The texture of the modern family unit has changed
from one homogenous mix that plainly resembles a bleached canvas to what
now seems closer to a patterned shag rug. What is the make-up of the
modern family?
"Being-Family" is an exhibit that looks at new family values and
structures. Presented during the Gay & Lesbian, Bisexual and
Transgendered Month at Miami Beach's City Hall Gallery, the show takes a
look at how close or far people may be especially in regards to their
familial interactions. The exhibit is on display from June 6 - July 18.
Miami Beach City Hall Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. -
5:30 p.m.
Artists from different backgrounds, ethnicities and sexualities were
asked to respond to the questions: What makes a family? Who is yourfamily? and What is today's modern family? ArtCenter artists Harumi Abe,
Neysa Jin Felker, The One-Three Collective and Franklin Sinanan
responded with their take of family. Their works are examinations around
community, belonging and family. They use imagery from the past and
present in works made especially for this issue.
Striking parallels develop as we look at the construct of family and
deduce its structure down to bare bones, hopefully clarifying what may
be the most important principal involved in the family unit, How do we
belonging? Is it based on units of togetherness instead of units of
blood? Is it a mix of shared experiences and time that tie us together
rather than the obligatory ties of a family?
These new family values are not just important to alternative
communities such as the gay, lesbian or transgendered communities. These
values are prevalent in a heterosexual's ethos as well. This is a likely
result of the World-wide Web ability to provide infinite access to any
social group imaginable. Chat rooms and blogs become symptomatic of a
blue-toothed culture signified by instant access to any point in the
world at any time. Finding a home external to the usual boundaries of
community, neighborhood and town is as simple as typing adjectives in a
