Dear Friends,
Last night I had an unexpected breath of fresh air. John McCain announced his selection of Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, as his running mate for the RNC's nomination next week. Actually, as most, I had hoped for and expected a more "logical" and safer name, such as Mit Romney, a proven manager and administrator, young and "ideally" a perfect stand-in for an allegedly older senior statesman. A "senior" who, like any other person alive, runs the risk of a mishap, and may have to be substituted in the midst of strife or danger. But just a few minutes later, when I heard Palin speak accepting her nomination, I felt totally won over by McCain's surprising choice. Sarah Palin is a winner. She's youthful, dynamic, earnest and may have a short biography, but we probably know more about her than we know about Barack Obama.Obviously, the Democratic Party and the hang-on press didn't waste a second in pointing out the "RISK" of such a choice. (See below excerpt of the NYTimes announcement of the event.) The argument is: This inexperienced woman would be one heart beat away from the Oval office; what a terrible risk... However, isn't there a risk in all facets of human affairs? I propose that there is a risk as well in electing a relatively unknown and equally inexperienced candidate to the White House. Barack's international experience is limited to having been born (supposedly) in off-shore United States, having visited Kenya as a boy, and having attended briefly a school in Indonesia (which some sources describe as a madrassa, or Islamic school). We also now know that Barack is an able politico and manipulator of words, a clever tactician, a masterful flip-flopper on issues, a friend and protegé of some very shady promoters (like Rvd. Wright and Islamic leader Louis Farrakan) for years, and later their shocked critic and denier.... Doesn't all this justify our belief that there is a monumental risk in having him sitting in the Oval Room, not even a heart beat separating him from absolute power at the helm of the greatest nation on Earth?
Yes, there are risks involved, but as for me I'd take the risk of having at that helm a strong, experienced man who's faced many situations of stress and trial during his multi-facetted career ...
