Dear Editor:
John McCain´s age really is irrelevant. Ronald Reagan was 72 when was elected to his first
term in office. Nelson Mandela was 75 when he was elected President of South Africa. Golda
Meir was "only" 70. She was 73 when she led her country in the Yom Kippur War.
Governor Sarah Palin, with two years of executive experience running her state, a few years running her town and the commission she chaired, is only running for Vice-President. By
contrast, Sen. Barack Obama, with three years in the US Senate and a handful of years in his state senate (where he doesn´t have to run anything but his mouth) and a career as a
"community organizer" (somebody who runs around with a clipboard trying to get petitions signed) has the effrontery to run for President. That is truly presumptuous. Some might use the
word "chutzpah".
To say McCain picked Palin just because she is a woman is an insult to women in general and Palin in particular. Likewise ditching the most qualified candidate in favour of a neophyte
and then not even bothering to put her on the ticket is an insult to women in general and to
Hillary Clinton in particular. The Democrats need to reassess their attitudes towards women.
And come up with a better plan.
