FAU Presents Oswaldo Guayasamín Exhibition

The University Galleries in the School of the Arts in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present
a series of public programs in association with Of Rage and Redemption: The Art of Oswaldo Guayasamín, a traveling exhibition surveying the work of one of the most highly regarded Latin American artists of the twentieth century.
The exhibition will be at FAU’s Schmidt Center Gallery from Friday,September 19 through Saturday, December 6. Public programs start on Friday, September 19 with the Southeast Conference on Andean and Amazonian Studies. The conference will bring together scholars that are devoted to the study of the Amazon and the Andean regions of South America. The first event in the conference, which will be held at the Holiday Inn Town Center in Boca Raton at noon on Friday, will be a lecture by Regina Harrison entitled “Insistent Images: Machu Pichu as Icon.” Harrison is a professor of Spanish and comparative literature at the University of Maryland, College Park. Later that day, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a lecture and reception to mark the opening of Of Rage and Redemption at the Schmidt Gallery on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture will presented by Galo Mora, minister of culture of the Republic of Ecuador. The conference will continue on Saturday, September 20at noon at the Holiday Inn with Norman Whitten, who will present“Interculturality and the Indigenization of Modernity: A View from Amazonian Ecuador.” Whitten is professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Latin American Studies and curator of the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne.On Saturday, October 4 at 8 p.m., there will be a concert by Kuyayky, a musical group that blends traditional Andean music with contemporary innovation. Then on Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m., there will be an evening of Andean poetry reading, presented by students from the FAU Spanish studies program in the Schmidt Center Gallery. On Thursday, October
16 at 7 p.m., Michele Greet, assistant professor of art history and expert on Latin American art at George Mason University, will conduct a tour of the Guayasamín exhibition.Finally, there will be a short Ecuadorian film festival on
