MIAMI, September 19, 2008) - With the nation facing some challenging economic times, the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department is issuing a reminder about the resources available to protect consumers' finances. This comes in the wake of an economic crisis that has claimed as its victims two venerable financial institutions, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, and nearly caused the collapse of insurance giant American International Group (AIG) - all in the past week.
Such recent news reports have given rise to consumer apprehension about whether their money is safe in their banks and various savings accounts. Consumers should know that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent agency of the U.S. government, protects depositors against the loss of their insured deposits if an FDIC-insured bank or savings association fails.
If you are concerned about the stability of your financial accounts, visit the FDIC website http://www.myfdicinsurance.gov/, answer a few questions and receive a report that lets you know whether your money is protected. For more information, read the guide to FDIC's Insurance Policy.
