(MIAMI, November 25, 2008) - A retrospective on the contribution to art by Latin American artists, a review of some of the broad social issues affecting our community, and a preview of the statewide exhibit by renowned sculptor John Henry are part of the wide-ranging art
exhibitions and programs being presented by the Miami-Dade Public Library System during its fall/winter season.

Culmer/Overtown Branch, 350 NW 13 St. - Sat., Dec. 13, 2- 4 p.m.
Homelessness and Mental Illness - A workshop, in collaboration with the
community artists of Rhythmic Rapture, about the very real link between
mental illness and homelessness.
Main Library, Auditorium, 101 West Flagler Street, through Dec. 18
The Girl Who Raised Pigeons - This exhibition's title comes from a short story with the same name by Edward P. Jones, author of The Known World.
In the story, the relationship between a father and daughter, living in
1960s Washington D.C., changes as a nearby railroad company buys up
property and the neighborhood around them disappears. The story's theme
and images appear in the work: family, loss, community vigilance,
changing landscapes. The show includes photography, drawing, and
painting by Gary Moore, Kathleen Hudspeth, Elizabeth Cerejido, Ryan
Holloway, Adler Guerrier, David Rohn, Vanessa Tomchik, Karla Turcios and
Bayunga Kialeuka.

Polychrome Affinities - The artistic team of Guerra de la Paz; Magali Wilensky and Michelle Weinberg have transformed the Main Library's
second floor exhibition space into an expansive tableau/plaza using intense colors and engaging forms. Viewers will enter a space populated by fabric constructions of anatomical forms, a free-standing rainbow clothed in colorful garments, and a giant canvas mural that brings urban architecture indoors

On the Street Where I Live - Photographs of Celia Cruz, by Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte, offer a glimpse into the life and times of the former
Salsa legend.
