Department of Environment Resources Management (DERM) has began delivery of domestic sand south of 29th street and Collins Avenue this morning
Miami-Dade Commission Chairman Bruno A. Barreiro will be holding a Town Hall Meeting next Monday, June 25, 2007 at the Triton Tower, 2899 Collins Avenue (Pool Side Function Room) at 7 p.m., to allow residents to express their views and find out what the County is doing to re-nourish the beaches.
Several areas in Miami Beach have been identified as hot spots resulting from the loss of sand due to erosion. Currently, Miami-Dade is prohibited from using non-domestic sand based on congressional language. Last week, Chairman Barreiro held a press conference with U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer to announce their federal request to appropriate $3.5 million to re-nourish our beaches and request that Miami-Dade be allowed to use foreign sand. Domestic sand is scarce in Florida.
To address the problem, Miami Dade’s Department of Environment Resources Management (DERM) has began delivery of domestic sand this morning just south of 29th street and Collins Avenue. The material is being stockpiled and then will be moved to fill the eroded areas.
