The public is invited to an Open House in celebration of International Literacy Day on Saturday, September 8, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Library in downtown Miami. International Literacy Day is a way to remind everyone about the importance of literacy for individuals, families, communities and whole societies. In Miami-Dade County, an estimated 42% of all adults are considered to be “functionally illiterate” which means they lack the minimum reading and writing skills necessary to function in society.
Throughout the day, guests will learn about Project L.E.A.D. and may register to become future volunteer tutors. Existing tutors will be honored for their service and new technology for tutors and adult learners will be on display.
